In Loving Memory of Jeremy Topper who died October 8, 2011. (1974-2011). Jeremy was the most likeable and humorous guy around. No one will make us laugh like you once did. Thoughts and Prayers go out to Bob, Deb, Randy, Brit, Brodie, and the whole Topper Family. We love you all. Jeremy, you will be missed, but never ever forgotten! Last week's cold temps made some good ice on the Grand Rapids area lakes. Those sketchy areas froze down for the most part. There are still those pressure ridges on lakes like Pokegama and Winnibigoshish that one must look out for. Do not drive those trucks close to them. The warm snaps we are having keep water flowing through and around those areas. Truck travel is well under way around the area. Most lakes have 15+ inches of ice.

Pokegama Report: One should expect a couple walleye bites at that prime time morning and evening windows. Focus on the steep drops on the tips of points, bars, and deep mid lake humps this time of year in 30-40 fow. The past week gave up lots of eaters on the smaller side(12-15"). Pike spearing is picking up on the lake now in 10-14 fow. Fishermen are finding fair to good panfish action in Tioga Bay.

Lake of the Woods offered the best and most consistent walleye bite again this past weekend. The bite was good to great 5 to 7 miles out across Pine Island in 30-34' feet of water. Look for this to be the best bite for the next week or two until those eyes decide to head farther out to the reefs or turn back to the shorelines. Truck travel is good out of Adrians Resort.

Red Lake was hit and miss this past weekend. Some fishermen struggled to catch a few eyes while others found a mess of fish here and there. It seems that the fish are moving away from the shoreline and out into the big pond. I believe your best bet is to get out into that 14fow and be mobile. Drill holes, fish them for 20 minutes, if nothing, move a couple hundred yards. One will eventually find a big school of hungry eyes with this approach. I know its hard to do when it's freezing cold out, but it leads to success. Use those Strikemaster augers to rip thru the ice and those Vexilar flashers to locate the fish. Good Luck.

Winnibigoshish and Leech were fair for walleyes this weekend. The humps on the Northwest part of Winni were good in the afternoon hours in 20-24fow. Stony Point was so so in 14-18fow in the evening hours. Truck travel is fair to good out of the resorts. Contact the resorts prior to planning your trip. It's a weird ice year this year. If you want to be mobile, bring those 4 wheelers. The ice is rough in many areas on our big lakes and it's easier to navigate with the wheelers.

The HLO Crew hit a few lake trout lakes in Grand Marais last weekend and did ok. Brock and Kevin fished Burntside in Ely on Wednesday and Thursday. Sunny conditions on Wed had the trout active in the morning hours in 45-55fow. A cloudy day on Thursday put a damper on the trout. My experiences are lake trout are much more active on sunny days with a steady barometer.
